OCEANS MATTER PODCAST 11 - SUSTAINABLE SURF (SEATREES)

Sustainable Surf is the overarching company that aims to reduce the impacts of climate change within the surf industry.  Their global programs and projects primarily are made up of SeaTrees and the ECOBOARD Project. Started by founders Kevin Whilden and Mark Stewart they now spawn over several countries and have worked with some of the biggest businesses in the world.

Seatrees enables both brands and individuals to make direct and measurable ways to reduce their carbon output. The way they do this is using indigenous wisdom and local communities to regenerate local eco systems, resulting in an increase of carbon sequestering plants, seaweed and mangroves. Their figures are so impressive they just have to be seen to be believed.

The second Major Component is the ECOBOARD Project, which i didn't actually realise was the gold standard for surfboard making until i started researching for this podcast. The ECOBOARD Project is used by the worlds best surfboard brands and best surfers with a recorded 280 board builders signed up the program. One of the major lightbulb moments I had from talking to Mark from Sustainable surf was that more waste is produced from making surfboards than what actually the surfboard consists of.

We caught up with Sustainable surfs communications manager Alena Riggs and Program manager Mark Alvarado to chat about the different missions they are embarking on.
